Dulphe Pinheiro-Machado [ Brazil: Verse & Reverse ] Set in Brazil and the United States, “Brazil: Verse and Reverse” documents the life of an artist who, while confined to his domestic space by the bureaucracy of immigration, finds consolation and inspiration in the companionship of his child and the creative possibilities offered by the small space in which he must work and live. The film is divided into two thematic sections -- a mythical “verse” and a realistic “reverse” --, the incongruity of which represents the contradictions between the world in which the immigrant-artist lives and the world that he observes. While taking place in 2018, with direct allusions made to ascension of the far-right in Brazil with the election of Jair Bolsonaro, the film’s focus on the intersection of politics and the domestic sphere and its use of long, fixed shots that capture the tedious boredom of home life present a pertinent reflection on daily life during the Covid-19 pandemic.
