Hyunmin Ryu [ MILK ] Transforming an unremarkable, quotidian activity into a ludic exercise in human endurance, MILK represents a playful, performative détournement with an electric, sliding door. Typical of other pieces in the Ryu’s oeuvre, which similarly capture the artist performing absurd and Sisyphean tasks, this film was originally conceived as a commentary on what he sees as the perceived powerlessness of artwork in everyday life. In a more general context, the work, with its inevitable conclusion, reflects on the physical limits of human comfort in an increasingly digital contemporary milieu. While the tone of the film is playful, this repetitive interaction with a rather simple form of nonhuman sensing reminds us as viewers of our dependence on and familiarity with technologies trained to respond continously and unnoticeably to our routine motions and habits.
